IAS officer to Marina Beach… High Court raises 12 questions to the Tamil Nadu government!
Chennai: The Chennai High Court has questioned the Tamil Nadu government as to why a committee headed by an IAS officer should not be set up to keep the Marina beach clean. The ongoing cases, including Velumani’s request to set up shops for ice cream vendors at the Chennai Marina Beach, came up for hearing in a session comprising Justices N. Kirupakaran and TV Tamilselvi.
At the time, the world’s largest beach, the Marina, was not properly maintained and no one cared about it. The lawyer appearing for the Chennai corporation said that steps are being taken to maintain it properly. Later in this case, the Zonal Officer of the Chennai Corporation and the Commissioner of the Chennai Metropolitan Police were added as respondents and some questions were raised.
Garbage is there a penalty for littering at Marina Beach? How much garbage is collected daily and how much garbage is collected? As have been questioned.
How much more, and how much is spent on beach maintenance? How much rent is charged from shop owners? Is the police on security duty after 10 pm to prevent crime? Why a fish market for fishermen near Marina Loop Road?
Toilets
How many mobile toilets are there in Marina from Anna Square to the lighthouse? If there are no such toilets, when will the beach toilets be set up to protect the environment at Marina Beach? They have also raised questions.
The judges also questioned the steps taken by the corporation to protect the beauty of the marina and ordered the Chennai corporation to provide an explanation.
Postponement of the case The trial has been adjourned till July 22 after the IAS officer, headed by an IAS officer, ordered a committee comprising Chennai Corporation, Tamil Nadu Public Works Department, police, environmental and social activists, representatives of traders and local body representatives to explain why the state government should not be set up.

1.What is the quantity of garbage generated in marina beach per day?
- How the garbage is being removed?
- Whether the people littering the beach are fined or not?
- How many restrooms are available in the beach and who are using it?
- Whether the mobile restrooms are being stationed at various points of the beach which runs from Anna stadium to light house?
- If it is not so, when the mobile restrooms will be established so as to secure the environment and beauty of the beach?
- How much money is being spent for maintaining the beach annually?
- What is the amount generated by way of income by collection of rent from the Vendors?
- Whether Proper police protection is provided and police booths are available at different points to prevent commission of offence as the visitors used to be in beach, even after 10.00Pm.
10.why not the fish vendors be given the fish market at the loop road to prevent fish vendors and public from encroaching upon the loop road?
