Bangladesh initiated to set up the International Mother Language Day and was approved at the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) General Conference 1999. This day was first observed across the world in 2000.

This day signifies how UNESCO believes in the importance of cultural and linguistic diversity for sustainable societies.
Linguistic diversity is increasingly coming under threat as many languages are disappearing. As per the UN report, 40% of the global population does not have access to an education in a language they speak or understand.
With a growing understanding of its importance, more commitment to its development in public life, progress is being made in mother tongue-based multilingual education.

According to UN, International Mother Language Day 2024 theme is ‘Using technology for multilingual learning: Challenges and Opportunities’. The UN mentioned in its statement that the theme of this year raises the potential role of technology to advance multilingual education and support the development of quality teaching and learning for all.
