Chennai: Humanitarian People’s Party leader Jawaharlal Nehru has said that the panel set up to recommend the early release of life prisoners has given new hope.
He said he hoped Justice Adinathan’s team would soon lead the way in the homes of the tear-stricken prisoners’ families.
Anna’s birthday
The Government of Tamil Nadu issued a decree on November 15 on the occasion of the birthday of Grandfather Anna, regarding the release of prisoners serving more than 10 years of life imprisonment. The conditions imposed for pre-release in this government were questionable as to the release of many prisoners who had served 20 years in prison.
Federation
We brought this matter to the attention of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and personally requested on behalf of the Federation of All Muslim Movements of Tamil Nadu that the Government take action for the release of those who have served more than 20 years of life imprisonment.
Led by Justice
Following this, it was announced that the Chief Minister would set up a six-member panel headed by retired Justice Adinathan to recommend that the lifers be given life imprisonment to reduce their sentence on humanitarian grounds and to be released before their probation, physical condition, mental health and physical condition are known.
Humanity
The statement added that the panel was set up to pave the way for humanitarian release of lifers serving 10 years and 20 years in prison who could not benefit from previous governments.
Tears well up
Hope has been born that Justice Adinathan’s team will soon lead the way in the homes of the families of prisoners who have shed tears over past discrimination. I urge the committee to hurry up and make its recommendation within a short period of time.
