Former Comedian Bhagwant Mann is all set to be sworn in as the next Chief Minister of Punjab.
Aam Aadmi Party’s CM candidate from Dhuri, Bhagwant Mann has won with a margin of 58,206 votes. The newly elected Punjab cabinet will take oath at Khatkarkalan, in Nawanshahr district, the village of Freedom fighter Bharat Singh.
The 48-year-old is a college dropout and he was one of India’s most popular comedians before he joined politics. The comedy show “The Great Indian Laughter Challenge” came out in the late 2000s was judged by Navjot Singh Sidhu, Mann’s biggest political rival. As an entertainer, his film was Kachheri which was released in 1994.
His total assets are Rs. 2 crores which include Rs. 48 lakh in movable assets and 1.5 crores as immovable assets. Mann’s has total liabilities of 30 lakh.
His wife filed divorced him in 2005. They have two children who live overseas. Mann joined politics in 2011, He had joined Badal’s People Party of Punjab. However, this decision turned out to be unsuccessful as he could not win Punjab Election in 2012.
Later in 2014, Mann joined AAP just before the general elections. He comfortably won the seat from Sangrur Lok Sabha by a record margin of over two lakh votes defeating Akali Dal leader S.S. Dhindsa.
Mann has had to deal with his controversies in his short time in politics. Mann allegedly arrived drunk on several occasions.
A video went viral back in 2015 of Mann’s allegedly drunkenly attending a meeting in Faridkot.
On January 18, AAP national convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had declared Bhagwant Mann as its CM candidate for Punjab assembly elections. He is the party’s state unit chief. Kejriwal declared the result at a public event of AAP’s ‘Janta Chunegi Apna CM’ drive in which 21.59 lakh responses were received from the public to elect its CM Face for Assembly polls and around 93.3% have voted in favor of Sardar Bhagwant Mann.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal applauded the people of Punjab for this revolution.
Post Elections, Mann has been maintaining that party will collect a comfortable majority. Among all AAP’s candidates, Mann is leading with the biggest margin.
