Krishna Janmashtami Vrat Rules: Devotees of Lord Krishna observe a day-long fast on Krishna Janmashtami (birth anniversary). Fasting is an integral part of Janmashtami celebrations in many parts of the country.
Some devotees start fasting a day before the festival day, while some skip dinner before the Puja performing day. Those who keep a Vrat maintain celibacy until they break their fast on the day after Krishnashtami.
Shri Krishna Janmashtami Vrat Rules
- Wake up early in the morning and have a bath
- Wear clean clothes
- Do Sankalpa (a pledge that you will sincerely keep the Vrat)
- Keep chanting the Shri Krishna name and maintain celibacy
- Don’t smoke or consume alcohol
- On the occasion of Janmashtami, don’t pluck Tulsi leaves from the plant at home

Janmashtami Vrat – What to eat and not
- You may have milk, fruits, and coconut water
- Don’t consume rice, wheat, and lentils in any form
- Don’t consume Tamasic food like garlic, onions
