Raksha Bandhan, which literally means “safety” and “connection,” honors the brother-sister relationship. It is observed on the full moon day, or Purnima, in the Hindu calendar month of Shravan, which this year falls on August 22. On this day, every sister ties a thread around her brother’s wrist as a token of her unwavering faith in him and her prayers for his long life. In exchange, the brother promises to keep her happy at all times and to safeguard her from all harm throughout his life.

Raksha Bandhan is also known as Rakhi in certain parts of India after the ornamental thread sisters wrap around their brothers’ wrists. While it can be enjoyed all day, there is a certain time when the age-old custom of tying the rakhi should be performed.

Raksha Bandhan History and Significance
Raksha Bandhan derives from a well-known episode mentioned in the epic Mahabharata. When Lord Krishna was flying a kite, the thread severed one of his fingers. To staunch the bleeding, Draupadi tore a piece of her saree and tied it around Krishna’s finger. Krishna, moved by the gesture, assured her that he would protect her from all evils for the rest of his life.
