Sanjay Leela Bhansali announced on Tuesday morning that his next Netflix project, Heeramandi, will be released later this year. Announcing his retirement comes on the 25th anniversary of his entry into the industry. It is going to be a webseries.
His name has not yet been revealed, nor has the cast and crew of Heeramandi. Courtesan stories and the hidden cultural reality of Heeramandi, Lahore during the pre-independence era of India will be explored in the production. According to the producers, the series will deal with themes such as love, betrayal, succession, and politics. The filmmaker is currently awaiting the release of Alia Bhatt’s Gangubai Kathiawadi, in which she will star.
In a press statement, Sanjay Leela Bhansali expressed his feelings about Heeramandi, saying, “Heeramandi is an important milestone in my journey as a filmmaker.” This is an epic, first-of-its-kind series about the courtesans of Lahore, and it is set in the city of Lahore. It is an ambitious, grand, and all-encompassing series, and as a result, I am both nervous and excited about the prospect of creating it. The prospect of working with Netflix and bringing Heeramandi to audiences all over the world is exciting to me.”
Earlier on Monday, Netflix India shared a lengthy message commemorating Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 25 years in the Hindi film industry. “An intricately detailed space, a new but familiar tune playing in the background, faces so bright that they could make the sun appear dull, a crescendo of a timeless tale that leaves you wanting to dwell in this dream; all of this, created by the dreamer, the cultural storehouse; who’d have us, and everyone around us, wondering, ‘How did he pull that off?'”
