Santan Saptami Vrat Katha
According to the scriptures, Lord Krishna told Yudhishthira that his parents had served Lomash Rishi in Mathura. By seeing their devotion, the sage was very pleased and asked them to keep the Saprami Vrat. Also, he told the story behind this Saptami Vrat.
According to legend, Chandramukhi (the wife of the king of Ayodhyapuri), and Rupvati Saheli (the wife of a Brahmin named Vishnudatta) were living in the same state. One day both of them went to take a bath in the Sarayu river, where some women were worshipping Parvati and Shiva. Both of them took a pledge to observe the Saptami Vrat for having kids. However, they forgot to observe this fast after returning house. After death, these two were born as chickens. Later, in the next life, they are born as humans. In this birth, Rupvati was born as Bhushana remembered and performed the Vrat of previous life, so she had eight children. But due to her forgetfulness, the Chandramukhi, whose name was Ishwari was deprived of bearing her own children even in this birth.
It is said that one day, Bhushana was immersed in her son’s mourning and the queen came to console her. On seeing her and her children, jealousy arose in the queen’s mind. She tried to kill Bhushana’s children but they were not harmed because of the Shiva-Parvati’s blessings. After apologizing, Ishwari apologized Bhushana and asked – why did your children not die? Bhushana reminded her about their previous birth and told her that nothing happened to my sons due to Saptami fasting’ effect. Later, Ishwari also kept this fast and gave birth to a beautiful child. Since then, it is believed that the fast of the Saptami is observed for the protection and happiness of children by all mothers.
