Bhuma Akhila Priya is a member of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). After the demise of her mother in 2014, she entered politics by joining YSRCP (Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party) and was elected as an MLA. But, in 2016, Akhila Priya and her father resigned from the party and joined TDP. She was assigned Ministry of Tourism, Telugu culture and language during a cabinet reshuffle in 2018.
