To take revenge on Takshak, King Janamejaya started a Yagna to eliminate the entire Nag Clan. By knowing this, Nagas went to Lord Brahma who assured them that in their next life they will be worshipped as gods.
Another reason to celebrate Nag Panchami is that Lord Krishna defeated the evil snake Kaliya and after some time Kaliya realized that the child was not ordinary and begged for forgiveness.
